No two takeoffs are exactly alike. When getting ready to takeoff you have to consider the wind conditions, runway surface and length, and any possible obstructions at the end of the runway. Before you takeoff remember to complete your checklist for takeoff and to contact the tower to inform them that you are ready for departure. Before you even begin to move your aircraft you must first obtain clearance from the control tower to taxi and then again prior to takeoff.

Procedure:
  1. Visually check to ensure that both approach and departure paths are clear of all aircraft. A good rule of thumb is to turn your aircraft 90 degrees in both directions to ensure paths are clear. Some control towers are very busy and are not always watching.
  2. Taxi onto the runway, lining up the nose of the aircraft and the nose-wheel with the centerline down the runway.
  3. Visually check the wind sock for the wind direction in relation the runway.
  4. Slowly push the throttle all the way to full power. Select a point down the runway to keep your plane straight down the center line. Use very little movements with the rudders to keep the aircraft straight. Keep the ball of your foot on the rudder pedals with the rest of your foot on the ground so there is no tendency for you to press the brakes.
  5. Always keep your hand on the throttle through the entire takeoff. This allows you to cut back on the power quickly if you decide to abort takeoff.
  6. Check engine instruments to make sure the engine is functioning within its operational limits.
  7. When you reach the takeoff speed recommended by the manufacturer, pull the yoke back slowly and maintain a good rate and angle of climb.
  8. Once airborne continue to fly down the runway and carryout the control towers instructions.
Reminder: The takeoff procedures listed above are a general guideline. Each aircraft has different takeoff procedures.
